Some of the athletes hanging out, below Rollen Rocks.

March 25th, 2017, Alpental held the Northwest Freeride Competition, right below the chair line of Edelweiss. I was hoping for more sun breaks, but it seemed like every time one of the athletes dropped, so did the clouds. It must have been tough for a lot of the kids with the super low light and vis. Below is a mashup of what I could see. 😉

Andrew Eckels, looking down the Zipper Chute at Twin Lakes.

This past Monday (4/3/17), Andrew Eckels, Jacob Mandell and Andrew Pringles landed in the Hyak parking lot around 8AM or so. Then skinned for Silver Peak, via a short ski down Hidden Valley, on the way. When they hit the Summit of Silver Peak, there was a massive cornice that kept them of the SE face. The crew decided to play it safe and ski the ridge line then, drop down towards the PCT. After that ski, the boyz rolled up toward the Zipper Chute, where they found some gnarly dust on crust at the entrance(which if Andrew left the audio, you would have herd Jacob giggling and calling it survival skiing as Andrew scratched his way down the chute) that became nice skiing lower down the chute. Check out the sweet edit, Andrew Eckels banged out yesterday of their adventure.

Here’s a fun edit Alex Ropka sent over from March Radness! He even managed to catch a couple clips of our homie, Jeff Rich! Spring has sprung and it’s been a great year, and looking for another blast or two before our lift served season ends.

Had to share this one, as I got a good laugh! Nick Colvin caught this train moving faster than usual plus fresh snow from Stella resulted in a more spectacular arrival than expected.

TNT in the Breakover Trees on 3/7/17, photo by Corey Warren with LiveMoreCreative.com

This week was unbelievable in the cascades! The faucet of blower powder never turned off and by midweek people had used up their sick days and the ski areas were empty! TNT and company got the goods at Alpental while Andrew Eckels and friends ripped up Baker on a sleeper day.

Hyak as seen at 3:45PM today (3/6/17)

I managed to start my day with some laps at Summit East on the cold POW, but you could still feel all of the frozen debris underfoot. This made me shoot for Alpental, in hopes the gates hadn’t opened yet. Wrong, they opened a bit earlier but I ran into some friends and still found a few pockets of goodness, out through the Elevator Gate. Good Times, and since it is puking out right now, tomorrow should be another great day for Cascade lift served snowriding!

Pre-Race beacon check, by Martin Volken

2017 was a great year for the classic Vertfest race at a little hill known as Alpental. A couple inches of snow came just in time to cover up the gnarly rain crust that had developed before the race, and for the first hour the sun shine broke through the clouds. Racers from all over the state and beyond came together to see how fast they could skin up and ski down the 2,300 vertical feet of steep terrain tucked away in a valley just 45 minutes from Seattle. The Pro racers had the special pleasure of climbing two laps for a total of 4,100 vertical feet.

Snow Trooper athlete Andrew Eckels opted to film this year instead of racing and got some great shots of local adventurers testing the limits of their physical capacities. Overall it was a great race with Alpental locals dominating the podium! Snow Trooper Athlete Jacob Mandell who has been boarding Alpental since he was in elementary school took first for the splitboard division! Congrats Jacob!
