Just a quick little Hyak Snow Report. Received 4″+ on New Year’s Eve followed by a warm front w/ Easterly outflows which = Frozen rain or even worse rain which is freezing right as it hits the surface. So long story short 3″ of new on 7/16″ rain crust. Below the crust is 3″ of wind packed snow on top of the Bone. If you made it out today in the Cascades I hope you made it out w/ no incidents.

Weather today mostly sunny – started a.m. around 29 but warmed to about 40 in the sun.
Gusty winds kept it chilly in places.  Lots of wind blown powder as you can see.

Spent all of last weekend at the race on pacific crest at West.  Pretty much your typical j3 and older race, but not so typical were the conditions.  Normally this time of year would prove to be less than ideal for racing, but the cold weather and sunshine made for a great weekend.  Most of the skiers and boarders at the summit were probably pissed about the rock solid snow, but all the racers and coaches couldn’t have asked for better conditions.  I was working pretty much the whole time, but managed to snap a few shots of an old buddy who just happened to be racing.  Coming up this weekend is the Masters Kickoff race, also at West.  I plan to slide my Seths through the grinder, give em a quick tune, and fore run on the mid fat twins   :)

Trip to Idaho in search of enough fresh for the bottomless ride along with a lot of good holiday eating and relaxing. Found it( sure helps finding the bottomless ride on 136mm under foot boards).  Upon arrival to Schweitzer just before Christmas 09 they received 6″ which really was 10″ off piste. Conditions were dust on crust w/ temps in the teens AND freezing FOG. Decided to keep it safe and get a better ski on some low angle tree/utility line skiing off of the Stela Chair above the cross country network. Note: Schweitzer DOES have an open BC policy, Just live to ski another day Snow Troopers. If you want to experience the BC but don’t have the “know how” but can ski “Blue Square” powder runs I suggest contacting Selkirk Powder Co. located right on top of the Great Escape high speed quad chair( they also have an office in the Schweitzer village.

After a few days of patience and good low angle slackcountry we were rewarded w/ Blue for untracked wind packed powder turns under bluebird skies! AWESOME!

Be Sure to check the vid.

Good and bad news out of Schweitzer Mountain Idaho today. First had a great day rippin up the gladed off piste slopes of Schweitzer on close to 10″ of fresh, followed up by awesome pizza at Bab’s Pizzeria on Hwy 2. The bad new was we lost  15 year old William Johnson, a snow loving brother today doing what we live for, riding the fresh! The Snow Troopers thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, RIP little Brotha!

Got out for some morning shralpin at alpy.  My good buddy Shaun Maurer arrived and had never ridden a set of fat skis, so I was sure to bring an extra set.  I let him ride my h-beezies (hellbents) and they proceeded to blow his mind.  Its always fun to have your entire view of skiing redefined in one morning, and just as fun to watch it all happen.   Anyways, we spent 6 runs ripping chair line,  powder bowl, kante, DJ’s and some other lines, all was well thanks to the sun and deep snow.  Chair two ended up breaking down, and was closed for the rest of thursday, which was slightly disappointing, but turned out to be a blessing for friday.  Friday morning on 2 was sunny, and not even close to tracked out!  All the good lines were still ready to go.   So we got at it and I snapped a few pics of Maurer straight STOMPING everything in sight.   Partially thanks to the huge sticks on his feet, but mostly cause he skis like he owns the mountain and all the snow on it.
