Join US Olympic Alpine Ski Team members icluding 2010 Bronze Medal winner Andrew Weibrecht, Hailey Duke, Kevin Francis, Keely Kelleher, WA’s own Scott Macartney, Alice McKennis, Laurenne Ross, Erik Schlopy, Leanne Smith, & Jake Zamansky for their annual race clinic and dinner auction. The dinner & auction start at 5pm on Sat. July 17th at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. Ski clinics will be held from 7am-1pm at Palmer Glacier on Mt. Hood on Sat. July 17 & 18. Mt. Rainier, WA – Huge Slab Avalanche w/ Climber Missing – June 5, 2010

My bro Scott Harder aka Climb Washington put together a ski tour on Sat. June 5th, 2010 to head for Muir and hit the Nisqually Chutes. I had to pass on this one for Trooper dog not being allowed in Mt. Rainier National Park ( just taking the Memorial holiday off and Trooper was needing a ski fix too). We had a good day up here on Snoqualmie Pass in the sun w/ wet slides on the sun effected slopes while up on Mt. Rainier a huge slab avalanche struck 11 climbers high up on the mountain. All climbers were rescued by guides w/ the exception of one climber who remains missing today. The missing climber was believed to be from Europe and did not have a climbing permit (per Mt. Here are a few words from Scott along w/ some video he shot:
This raw video footage I shot as I ascended to Camp Muir. The Chinook helicopter scoured the mountain and the smaller heli transported the other climbers. The heli landed 2x at Camp Muir. Once as I was approaching and a second as I was leaving. The rangers had everyone leave or go far away so that the rotors did not cause any damage. After all, the landing pad is very small and there is not much room at Camp Muir.

Katal Landing Pad opens tomorrow at Mammoth Mtn.

Opening tomorrow at Mammoth Mountain: the Katal Landing Pad – “Measuring at 50 feet wide by 90 feet long and 5 feet thick, the Katal Landing Pad covers the entire surface area of a jump after the takeoff allowing users to attempt new tricks without the consequences of crashing on an icy landing. Unlike traditional foam pits used for jumping, the Katal Landing Pad allows users to “ride-out” their landings to more closely simulate an actual jump landing. The Katal Landing Pad will be installed on a custom jump featuring three takeoffs ranging from 10-60 feet.” Check it out here

Squaw’s open until 5/9. Mt. Hood Meadows (open weekends only in May) and Mt. Bachelor 5/16. Blackcomb 5/24. Alyeska and Snowbird 5/31. A-basin 6/6? And then there’s Mammoth which announced last week that they’ll stay open until 7/4. Mt. Hood Timberline is open all summer. Did we miss any? Related posts:Mt. Huge Congrats to this year’s winner of the Arctic Man: Scott Macartney (US Ski Team racer out of Redmond, WA). This is his 2nd victory at the Arctic Man. Sting on my way out of Jackson Hole where common sense (and ironically Cheney) still live. Case in point: I’m in the security checkpoint line at the airport. There’s a teen ahead of me. He gets to the checkpoint and TSA asks for “boarding pass & i.d.”. Guy hands over his boarding pass. TSA looks at it and asks “i.d.?”. Guy says “don’t have any”. TSA says: “no driver’s license?”. Guy says “No. but I have a ski pass”. TSA says: ” OK” and waves him through. True story.

Jackson Hole – 6″ new and sun, Mar. 23, 2010

6″ fell in last 24hrs at Jackson Hole – folks headed straight for the backcountry, others took the plunge down Corbett’s Couloir which opened today. Temps warmed but untracked snow stayed light and dry. Check out the pix. Jackson Hole’s backcountry is amazing and with the high speed tram and 4,139′ vertical, this Snow Trooper got about 30,000′ today.
