After taking the Memorial Day weekend off from skiing + a few more days, a big day was on order. Chose to head for Rampart Lakes via the Lake Lillian fishermen trail. Met up w/ Jerad at Hyak around 8AM and at the snow line just a few minutes walk before the TH 20 minutes later. Strapped the skis on the pack and started through all the Alder hanging over the trail. Lots of water moving in all the creeks from all the past rain, but the sun was out Saturday! Made our way up towards Laura Lake and after the second steep pitch on Summer trail we hit snow. Still left the skis on the pack all the way to Lillian. Put the skins on there and made our way up and out booting the last 100′ to the ridge. Wham! Lots of snow in this zone still, made our way for Rampart Ridge for great views North and into Gold Creek. Did our first ski all the way down to the first most Southern lake and hit a couple more skis in that zone (the snow skied great on the steeper slopes and in the bed surface for me, but lower angles had “walls” of pasty snow that would grab the skis) before making our way back to Lake Lillian which yielded two more nice ski descents not including the final (good and firm on the steeps) ski down on to Lake Lillian.

The snow was icothermic on the sun effected East slopes where we triggered a couple nice sized growlers. The final ski down to Lillian on the South face skied much better and was quite stable. On the way out probed the Lake in center and hit an ice layer I couldn’t penetrate at 6′ down.

Good zone for people wanting to get away from the sleds in the Winter (but you might want a sled to shorten the 5 mile slog to “Summer Time TH).

TNT here, updating Sting’s post from June 5th, 2010.

My bro Scott Harder aka Climb Washington put together a ski tour on Sat. June 5th, 2010 to head for Muir and hit the Nisqually Chutes. I had to pass on this one for Trooper dog not being allowed in Mt. Rainier National Park ( just taking the Memorial holiday off and Trooper was needing a ski fix too). We had a good day up here on Snoqualmie Pass in the sun w/ wet slides on the sun effected slopes while up on Mt. Rainier a huge slab avalanche struck 11 climbers high up on the mountain. All climbers were rescued by guides w/ the exception of one climber who remains missing today. The missing climber was believed to be from Europe and did not have a climbing permit (per Mt. Rainier officials). Check out video of the story here, and be sure to check out Scott’s pics too!

Here are a few words from Scott along w/ some video he shot:
This raw video footage I shot as I ascended to Camp Muir. The Chinook helicopter scoured the mountain and the smaller heli transported the other climbers. The heli landed 2x at Camp Muir. Once as I was approaching and a second as I was leaving. The rangers had everyone leave or go far away so that the rotors did not cause any damage. After all, the landing pad is very small and there is not much room at Camp Muir.

Below is a story/video of a skier who was on his way up and also was hit by the avalanche.

Below is the original story Sting Posted on June 5th.

Rob Larson and I put together this edit with a bunch of footage from late March/early April. Basically it is mostly Cole and I hittin it deep up at baker, with some other Stevens shots in there for good measure. Couple clips of John Shaw, and a couple shots of Cole’s brother, Zach, who rips it hard on the daily up at Baker as a Pro Patrol. I was horribly sick during this whole time, but couldn’t seem to stop skiing, I’ve toned the HC audio down so its not just me coughing the whole time! This storm cycle was the start of the season’s late comeback, which lasted deep into April. Cole’s RMK actually ended up seizing up near grouse ridge this week and we had to pull it out, much of which by hand and with ropes, what a pain in the ass….. Time for a new sled! Anyway, enjoy the vid!

This video is some steep chute action up in BC, Canada w/ our Bro Andy Traslin going after the Aussie Coulior back on May 13th, 2010. Here is what Andy had to say about the ski tour.

Four hours from Vancouver you will find a classic mostly 45 degree chute amongst an awesome setting off Joffre Peak which is where the video below was filmed by our Bro Andy Traslin going after the Aussie Couloir back on May 13th, 2010. Here is a little of what Andy had to say about the trip:

I was attemping to do a link-up of some of the peaks in the Joffre group, but I was having a bad day and barley made it up the Anniversary glacier in the heat.Rested at the col then made the boot pack up the Aussie Couloir, I did it around 10 years ago.I forgot how fun of a snow climb this is, straithforward 45 degree boot pack. The descent was even better and excellent corn down the Anniversay glacier but getting isothermic near the bottom.

Back on March 11th, 2010 I met Gunnar Newquist walking though Alyeska’s day lodge w/ a posse all sporting the Contour HD cameras and had to say hey. Gunnar let me know they were up from their home mountain Squaw Valley timing the pow perfectly and what would become the best ski trip they have ever had. Ran into Gunnar a couple more times on this trip the last place being Turnagain Pass on my last day for a tour. As we all geared up in the parking lot for an epic bluebird powder ski tour Gunnar told me their next AK target was heading down to Cordova for some BIG Spine skiing w/ Points North Heli Adventures. Here is the SICK Contour POV of the action.

We had a blast yesterday on another mission up to the local hot spot, Silver Peak.  Cole, Andy Devore, and myself left late but met up with Tim and some friends around noon for some soft serve action.  Heidi, Matt, Catherine Crim and Travis toured up with Tim much earlier and were waiting at the top when I got there after leaving Cole and Andy to hike the ridge further down.  They had to get a small cliff band that looked too good to pass up.  While I went to watch them drop in Tim and the gang did a lap on Miller Time and started the tour back up for a final lap.  However, Tim, being a monster on the skins, decided to stick around with us for the rest of the day.  We sessioned the typical zone for hours and found a couple nice drops and a great cornice to play on.   A couple more of our local friends showed up and got a little show of some fun lines and tumbles during play time :)   Much of the day was spent waiting for the cloud cover to part for just enough time to ski, but it was worth the wait.  The snow was buttery smooth and all the debris was so soft you could blow right through it!  No Complaints on another great day at Silver.  Check out the pics taken by Andy.

John Stimberis from the Washington State Dept. of Transportation reported on May 18th that crews have reached the Pacific Crest Trail bridge from the Southeast entrance (coming from Yakima/Naches). The plan is to have Chinook Pass open on May 28, 2010. See the WSDOT’s page and some pics click here

Below is an old Snoqualmie Snow Trooper trip to Chinook to see some of the goods. Please note Trooper dog doesn’t get hurt by the small wet slide that hosed him.

Snow continues to fall in the Cascade mountains. About 4″ new at 5′000 which skied a lot better than I had expected. Snow Pack is still deep w/ good skiing ahead of us for at least another few weeks if not more on Snoqualmie Pass.
