Whitefish, MT, I can’t say enough about this awesome mountain town, that has something for everyone in your party (even if they don’t ski). However, it really is a ski town that has a world class resort looking down on the main drag. Also should mention the “off season” for all of us snow lovers happens to be the “peak season” for the Summer tourist hitting Glacier National Park. Reading all of that, you might think there are big lift lines and a crowded mountain too, but that is far from reality. On my last day of this trip, my good friend Nathan Powell and I stood by chair 1 to get a time lapse, when he commented that the line was about as big as it ever gets (for a busy weekend). As you will see in the first video below, it doesn’t take long to go from “first chair” to NO lift line (which I have found in all of my days so far at Whitefish Mountain Resort, to be typical). In a one week stay at Whitefish, you should see everything in the vid below, except a little deeper cold POWDER! The morning after we took off from Whitefish, I got the text from “Big Dave” letting me know they had a foot powder waiting for them. Mother Nature’s faucet stayed on pretty good thru the holidays and is still cranking into the New Year.
In my view, to call a certain zone home, there needs to be a perfect mix of “lift served skiing”, “backcountry skiing”, “year round skiing”, amazing views, along with breathtaking running and hiking trails… This place has it all, and the cost of living is much better than your typical world class resorts. Here’s the banger deal, EAT, SKI, SLEEP, repeat for just $84 bucks. Another idea is the Amtrak train, just checked a fare from Seattle to Whitefish, 2 weeks out on a Sunday night, and found coach under $70 bucks and the “superliner roomette” was under $170, (which sleeps 2). Smoking deals, so grab the crew and head for Whitefish, but let me know when you’re going! 😉
