TNT here, it was just before 4pm and I was on my way from Alpental to Summit West when I noticed a helicopter in the parking lot closest to I-90 (which is not a good sign). Pulled over and watched 2 choppers take off towards the Commonwealth and then hover above Red Mountain. Seems a search and rescue was in progress. A mountain friend who went up Red Mountain earlier today confirmed my suspicions, finding a pack, skis and helmet of a very well know woman in our ski community. Her gear was found just steps from a large cornice that had pealed off falling some 600′ straight down. As of tonight, all I can say is I’m watching an army of search and rescue folks gear up and head out after the helicopter rescue was unsuccessful.
